Neapolitan Festivals

January to February

Epiphany, La Befana

Just after Christmas, on 5 January, La Befana is celebrated in Piazza Mercato.

Feast of Sant'Antuono (Saint Anthony the Abbot)

On the night of 17 January in Piazza Mercato, the “Fucarazzo” is lit in honour of Saint Anthony the Abbot, who was invoked to cure the “fire of the ardents”, the “fire of Saint Anthony”.

In fact, Saint Anthony the Abbot is often depicted with burning coals, a symbolism adopted in Naples, where a large fire is lit.

The ‘fire of Saint Anthony’ was a medieval disease that no longer exists, so the ‘Fucarazzo’ is now used to mark the transition from winter to spring and ward off evil.

Feast of the Madonna di Montevergine

Every 2nd of February, Neapolitan popular and religious tradition celebrates the Virgin Mary with the “Juta dei Femminielli”, the “juta” meaning the ascent.

The Madonna di Montevergine is the protector of marginalised people and this festival has also become a symbol for the LGBT community.

March to April

Marzo Donna

This event is organised by the city of Naples in honour of women to combat gender inequality.

Several events, meetings and conferences are organised from the end of the first week of March until the end of the month.

Feast of Saint Vincent Ferrer “O” Munacone'

On 5 April, Saint Vincent Ferrer “O” Munacone' is celebrated in the church of Santa Maria della Sanità.

On that day, after Mass, the statue of the saint is carried in procession through the streets of the Sanità district.

Easter

Easter is an occasion for numerous processions in Naples and the surrounding area.

On the island of Procida, the procession known as “dei Misteri” (of the mysteries) is particularly beautiful.

This procession takes place every year in the early hours of Good Friday and has done so since the end of the 17th century.

May

Comicon Napoli

Comicon Napoli is an international exhibition that brings together masters of comic books, icons of video games and big names in animation.

It is held every year at the end of April, this year from 30 April to 3 May 2026.

Feast of the Madonna del Carmine

This feast is celebrated between 15 and 16 July in the Mercato district with fireworks that every year give the impression that the Bell Tower of the Madonna del Carmine church is on fire.

September-October

Feast of the Madonna di Piedigrotta

It is celebrated in September, on the day of the birth of the Virgin Mary.

A statue of the Virgin Mary is carried in procession from Borgo Marinari, where Castel dell'Ovo is located, to Mergellina.

The Miracle of San Gennaro

Every year, on 19 September, at the Duomo of Naples, the feast of the miracle of San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples, is celebrated with the liquefaction of the saint's blood.

This festival is held three times a year, on 19 September, the day of the martyrdom of the saint, on the Saturday before the first Sunday in May for the transfer of the relics, and on 16 December, the date of the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631.

The miracle of the saint's coagulated blood in ampoules liquefying during these days is a very important religious event in Naples, attracting thousands of faithful who hope that the miracle will happen again each time to bring good luck to Naples and the Neapolitans.

December

Feast of the Immaculate Conception

As throughout Italy, 8 December is the day of the celebration of the Immaculate Conception, which is held in Naples' Piazza del Gesù.
