The Circumvesuviana railway lines from Naples to Sorrento via Herculaneum and Pompeii and up Mount Vesuvius

To get to Sorrento and especially Pompeii or Herculaneum from Naples Central Station (Garibaldi), you can take a taxi, or the shuttle bus that connects Naples to Pompeii.

A single ticket from Naples to Herculaneum on the EAV transport company costs €2.60, and a ticket to Pompeii costs €3.30.

Where and from whom can you purchase your Circumvesuviana train tickets to Pompeii and Herculaneum?

The EAV company is responsible for the management of the Circumvesuviana train line.

You can purchase your EAV train tickets directly at Naples Central Station (Stazione Centrale Garibaldi).

Their ticket offices are located in the hall that leads to the Circumvesuviana line platforms.

The EAV website below is only in Italian, but in the menu bar you will see an ENG option that allows you to access the train timetables in English, which are provided in PDF format.

The ANM company, which manages buses and the underground in Naples, also sells tickets for Pompeii and Herculaneum, but we recommend that you purchase them at equivalent prices from the EAV company because ANM tickets for local lines are not valid on EAV lines.

Tips for getting to Herculaneum and seeing Vesuvius with the Circumvesuviana

To access the train platforms for Herculaneum (Ercolano Scavi), follow the signs for ‘Circumvesuviana’ on the direction signs inside Naples's Garibaldi Central Station.

To reach the archaeological site of Herculaneum (Ercolano in Italian), you must make sure you get off at the ‘SCAVI’ stop in Ercolano, which means ‘Ruins’, as this town has two different stations that are quite far apart

Please ensure you alight at the ERCOLANO SCAVI stop.

Please note that not all trains stop at Herculaneum (Ercolano in Italian). . First, check the timetables on the EAV website mentioned above and only choose the lines marked ‘DD’ or ‘EXP’, making sure that your train stops at Ercolano Scavi.

The journey from Garibaldi Central Station in Naples to Herculaneum takes between 15 and 17 minutes, depending on the train.

When you exit Ercolano Scavi Station, you must take a long street that goes straight downhill from the station to the ruins of Herculaneum, about one kilometre away.

The street is lined with cafés and restaurants all the way to the Herculaneum site. This is important to know because there are no bars or restaurants at the ruins site; only vending machines selling drinks and snacks are available.

If you would like to hike up Mount Vesuvius, buses depart from Ercolano Scavi station and take you up to 1,000 metres above sea level.

Tips for getting to Pompeii with the Circumvesuviana

To access the train platforms for Pompeii, follow the ‘Circumvesuviana’ signs on the direction signs inside the Garibaldi Central Station in Naples.

The journey from Naples Central Station to Pompeii takes between 34 and 40 minutes, depending on the train.

To visit the archaeological site of Pompeii, you must stop at the ‘SCAVI’ stop, which means ‘Ruins’, as Pompeii has two different stations.

You need to get off at the ‘POMPEI SCAVI VILLA DEI MISTERI’ stop.

When you exit the Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri station, turn right and after a little over 100 metres, on the other side of the street (left side), you will see the entrance to the ruins of Pompeii, ‘Porta Marina’.

You will find restaurants and bars on this street, but please note that there is also a catering service (and toilets) inside the Pompeii site at the end of the large Forum.

When you leave the ruins of Pompeii to catch your train back to Naples, be careful to choose the ‘Porta Marina’ exit, otherwise you will arrive at the other Pompeii station and not the Circumvesuviana station.
