Jago – “Self-Portrait”

Jago’s self-portrait is a rather impressive sculpture due to the presence it exudes.

The artist’s gaze is the primary reason for this.

His gaze seems to follow us as we move around this bust, which can be seen perfectly in our photos in an almost surreal way.

Even in the two photos we took from above, his eyes look up at us and gaze at us intensely.

Jago, Self-Portrait To achieve this little artistic feat, Jago carved out his eye sockets and painted the irises of his eyes against the background of the sockets.

The way he presses his arms against his chest whilst clutching them with his hands whose fingers dig into his flesh adds a sense of tension.

This hunched posture helps him to concentrate and reflect on his work in progress; his facial features are those of a thinker in deep concentration, determined to create forms that are both evocative and aesthetic.

This beautiful self-portrait is also a celebration of the sculptor, highlighting the mental effort required for creation, combined with the physical vigour needed to practise such a demanding craft.
