Gaetano Esposito, Portrait of Vincenzo Migliaro at the Galleria d’Italia Zevallos in Naples
Gaetano Esposito (1858–1911) “Portrait of the painter Vincenzo Migliaro”
Painting – Oil on canvas (48.5 x 37 cm) 1876
Vincenzo Migliaro Gaetano Esposito and Vicenzo Migliaro, both born in late 1858 and from modest backgrounds, attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples together, where they were pupils of Domenico Morelli.
This beautiful portrait of the eighteen-year-old Migliaro, seen in profile, was painted by an artist of the same age who was already demonstrating an undeniable talent that would go on to achieve great success.
Esposito had taken part in numerous international exhibitions in Rome, Turin, Milan, Venice, Saint Petersburg and London.
He took his own life at the age of fifty-three, believing himself responsible for the death of a young woman who had posed for him as a model, and whose advances he had rejected.
