Sculpture of a galloping stag at the Archaeological Museum of Naples, Italy
Galloping stag, Temple of Apollo, Pompeii
Sculpture – Marble (71 x 34 cm) 1st century BCThis galloping stag stands on a white marble plinth dedicated to Marco Fabio Secondo, a prominent figure from Pompeii.

Galloping Stag It was once located in the Temple of Apollo in Pompeii.
This plinth is adorned with two winged Cupids flanking a garland of leaves and flowers.
The inscription on the plinth and the depiction of the stag seem to indicate that the statue was intended for the goddess Diana.
The stag is depicted with its belly resting on a tree trunk.
The animal is galloping and is arching its back to escape a wild beast that has clung to its back.
The stag’s body reveals the beast’s paws.
The claws have already sunk deep into the flank and hindquarters of its victim.
