Lion sculpture at the Archaeological Museum of Naples, Italy

Standing lion, Farnese Collection

Sculpture – Marble (Height 180 cm) 2nd century

This large lion is depicted with its head turned to one side whilst it appears to be roaring.

Its mane is thick and its broad, clawed paws betray its power and strength.

In Greek and Roman mythology, killing a lion was often a test to demonstrate one’s courage.
