The Royal Palace of Naples in Italy: Galleries and Art Collections

Plebiscito Square and the Royal Palace The Royal Palace in Naples measures 169 metres wide by 245 metres long.
Its front façade opens onto the large and famous Piazza del Plebiscito.
The first rulers of the Kingdom of Naples, the Normans and the Swabians, and their successors, resided at Castel Capuano in Palermo.
Charles I of Anjou had Castel Nuovo built as a new royal residence after transferring the capital of the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily to Naples.

The Grand Staircase of the Palais Royal A royal residence which, at the time, had the advantage of also serving as a fortress.
In 1553, Don Pedro de Toledo, the Viceroy of Naples, decided that this castle-fortress no longer met the requirements and splendour of a Spanish court, and that the dangers were no longer the same.
He therefore had a new royal palace built (now lost) on the site of the gardens situated between the Castel Nuovo and the current Royal Palace.
In 1565, the work was completed, but this new palace still resembled a fortress rather than a royal residence.
The current Royal Palace, the construction of which began in 1600, was the residence of the kings of Naples until the end of the 19th century, and King Emmanuel III of Italy was born there.
