Andy Warhol (1928–1987), Vesuvius, at the Capodimonte Museum in Naples, Italy
Andy Warhol “Vesuvius”
Painting – Acrylic on canvas (230 x 300 cm) 1985Andy Warhol’s painting conveys the violence of a Vesuvius eruption through the brilliance and contrast of colours, resulting in this fascinating yet frightening image of the power of natural phenomena.

Andy Warhol, Vesuvius Lava, smoke and ash are hurled into the air like fireworks, but with such force that they fill the upper half of the painting.
Vesuvius itself is merely a small red hill – small, but dangerous – due to the effects of its eruption on the surrounding area, where everything is already covered in ash and lava.
One can feel the heat, smell the odour, sense the horror and danger, and relive the anguish and fear that gripped the inhabitants of Pompeii and Herculaneum two thousand years ago, when the volcano erupted, engulfing the surrounding towns and countryside in ash and wiping them out in an instant.
