This painting by Masolino was originally placed on the high altar of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome.
On the night of 4–5 August 352, there was a miraculous snowfall on the Esquiline Hill in Rome.
In the early hours of the morning, Pope Liberius marked out in the pristine snow the site intended for the construction of a basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
At the top of the painting, Christ and the Virgin are causing the snow to fall.
Beneath them, Pope Liberius, surrounded by clergy and Roman dignitaries, is marking out the lines of the future basilica.
Masolino da Panicale “The Assumption of the Virgin”
Assumption of the Virgin Painting – Tempera on wood (142 x 76 cm) 1423–1428
This painting by Masolino was also placed on the high altar of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome.
The Virgin is depicted there within a mandorla, surrounded by angels and cherubs who are raising her to heaven.
The four angels at the bottom of the painting are musician angels.
The two angels on either side above them hold a banner bearing the word ‘virtues’.
The Virgin, dressed in white, has her hands clasped in prayer and her name is written in the halo around her head.
At the summit of the heavenly light, Christ opens his arms to welcome her.
