Palma the Elder (1480–1528) Holy Conversation, Capodimonte Museum, Naples

Palma the Elder “Holy Conversation and Donors”

Painting – Oil on wood (131 x 194 cm) 1525

The theme of the Holy Conversation, which first appeared in Tuscany in the 15th century with Fra Angelico, proved so successful that painters such as Giovanni Bellini produced more than a dozen such works; Palma the Elder specialised in this very theme.

The Holy Conversation is a depiction of the Virgin and Child surrounded by saints and angelic musicians.

The Virgin is often seated on a throne, or, as here, occupying a prominent position at the centre of the painting.

Palma the Elder, Holy Conversation
The left-hand side of the painting shows Catherine of Alexandria and Saint John the Baptist kneeling, whilst Joseph sits on the right watching the Infant Jesus.

The Virgin is looking at Saint John the Baptist, who is speaking to her humbly whilst pointing out the work’s patrons depicted in the lower right-hand corner.

Palma the Elder depicted them as spectators to the conversation, dressed in Renaissance style, whilst the Holy Family and the saints are dressed in traditional ancient style.

The Virgin listens to Saint John the Baptist, who is pointing towards the donors, whilst Saint Catherine of Alexandria holds her martyr’s palm in her right hand and a piece of the wheel on which she was tortured in the other.

The quality of the depiction of this pair of donors is admirable, as their gazes directed towards Saint John the Baptist are particularly expressive. They are in themselves a painting within a painting.

The woman has her hands clasped, whilst her husband has his arms crossed over his chest; both are addressing their prayers to the saints, asking them to commend them to the Virgin and the Infant Jesus, who is blessing them, visibly moved by their plea.

The Infant Jesus looks upon them whilst Joseph stretches out his arm to link them to the Holy Family.

The colours are vibrant and the play of light and shadow on the clothing gives depth to the figures, making them stand out from the landscape behind them.
