Luini, Madonna and Child
Painting – Oil on canvas (84 x 65 cm) 1515–1520

This magnificent painting by Bernardino Luini offers a dynamic image of the Infant Jesus standing on the lap of the Virgin Mary, who helps him keep his balance by gently holding him around the waist.

The Infant Jesus appears happy, gazing at something with a faint smile as he rests his right hand on the collar of Mary’s robe.

Mary’s beautiful face smiles gently as she looks down at her son’s little hand, through which he expresses his trust and love for her.

Her smooth and serene face is of a supernatural beauty, in the style of Leonardo da Vinci.

In the top right-hand corner, one can see a fleur-de-lis, a symbol of virginal purity.

Here, as in all his other paintings, Luini used the sfumato technique of his master Leonardo da Vinci;; the exceptional quality of this work is such that it was long attributed to Leonardo da Vinci himself.

The Capodimonte Museum eventually attributed it to Bernardino Luini.
