The colours, the expressions, all the details are beautifully executed.

The scene takes place in a royal palace with a central column decorated with right-angled projections.

A Doric frieze decorates the top of the wall.

Against a background of bright red, three figures are depicted.

On the left stands an old man, leaning on a gnarled stick, who observes attentively the couple in front of him.

The letter ā€œEā€ can be seen on the seal of the ring he wears on his left hand, suggesting that he may be a philosopher of the Epicurean school.

Although the scene appears to take place in a palace, the two figures on the right are seated on rocks.

The woman seated in the foreground has been identified as Queen Phila, mother of Antigonus II Gonatas, King of Macedonia, who succeeded in defeating Pyrrhus after he had seized the kingdom.

It is believed that the man seated in front of Queen Phila, wearing a kausia, the flat Macedonian headdress, and holding a long spear, with a round star-shaped shield at his feet, is none other than Antigonus, listening to his mother's advice.
