Sculpture of Nike at the Archaeological Museum of Naples, Italy
Nike, Farnese Collection
Sculpture – Italian brown marble (Height 167 cm) Late 2nd century
Nike, Farnese Daughter of the Titan Pallas and the goddess Styx, Nike personified winged victory, who bestowed the laurel wreath and the palm branch upon the victor at the conclusion of a battle or sporting contest.
This sculpture, missing its head and wings , comes from the Farnese collection .
It is a Roman copy from the late 2nd century based on a Greek model dating from the Hellenistic period (c. 330 BC), when sculptors created living beauty in motion with drapery moulding the forms of the body.
The gown clings to Nike’s body as it is blown by the wind just as she approaches the ground beside the victor.
