River and Sea Deities at the Archaeological Museum of Naples, Italy

Depicted here are river and sea deities.

The two male statues from the Farnese collection are those of marine deities, two oceans depicted with attributes such as a sea dragon, an oar, and also a cornucopia.

Male river or sea deities are also characterised by the depiction of middle-aged men, typically bearded and with long hair, with the exception of one of these male river statues, which depicts a younger god with a full head of hair but no beard.

The more advanced age of the gods therefore implied the wearing of a beard in these divine representations.

To these male deities, we must add the Nereids, sea deities who are the daughters of Nereus and Doris.

The Nereids seated on giant seahorses which serve as their thrones.
