Aphrodite Venus, at the Archaeological Museum of Naples in Italy

Modest Aphrodite Aphrodite, the goddess of love , became Venus in Roman mythology.
According to various legends, Aphrodite is said to have been the daughter of Zeus and Dione, born from the god’s semen, or the daughter of Uranus, whose genitals Cronus had severed; these, falling into the sea, gave birth to Aphrodite, the Woman born of the waves.
In the version set at sea, as she emerged from the water, the Zephyrs carried her to Cythera, then to Cyprus, where she was received by the Seasons who dressed her, as in the “Birth of Venus” by Botticelli, which is housed in the Ufizzi Gallery in Florence.
Her tumultuous and varied love affairs made her the goddess of love.
She was married to Hephaestus whilst being in love with Ares, with whom she cheated on her husband and had five children: Eros, Anteros, Deimos, Phobos and Harmonia.

Aphrodite Triumphant After Ares, she took Anchises as her lover, with whom she had two sons: Aeneas and Lyrnos.
Among the Romans, Aphrodite, who became Venus, was regarded not only as the goddess of love and fertility, but also as the goddess of gardens.
The Romans honoured Aphrodite-Venus as she had protected the flight of Anchises and Aeneas, her son, to Rome after the fall of Troy.
The Romans then regarded themselves as the descendants of the Jiuli, that is to say, of Aeneas.
Thus Julius Caesar had built on the Roman Forum, a temple in honour of Venus Genitrix, the mother Venus, of whom he considered himself to be one of her descendants, thereby asserting his divine ancestry.
