Venus Anadyomene, emerging from the water to bathe, Archaeological Museum of Naples, Italy

Venus Anadyomene This type of Venus Aphrodite refers to the tradition according to which the goddess’s father was said to be Uranus, whose genitals had been severed by Cronus and had thus given rise to the “goddess emerging from the waves” as they fell into the sea.
A Venus Anadyomene is a goddess emerging from the water.
By extension, this term has been applied to all Venuses emerging from the bath or preparing to bathe.
They may be undressing, drying themselves or combing their hair.
This Venus, fresh from her bath and combing her hair, is one of the most common depictions.

Venus Anadyomene The statues of Venus shown here are all from Pompeii.
The large ones come from the temple dedicated to Isis in Pompeii, whilst the others, which are small, were found in houses as decorative objects.
They were often associated with Dionysus, god of joy and merriment.
Representing beauty, amorous seduction, eroticism and fertility, Venus therefore found her place in the luxurious residences of Pompeii, where happiness was closely linked to love.
Some of these sculptures of Venus emerging from the water also adorned the fountains in the gardens of the villas in Pompeii.
