Aphrodite Venus Sosandra

Aphrodite Sosandra Sculpture – Marble – 2nd century
This statue was discovered in the ruins of Baia.
This town was a popular spa and holiday resort north of the Bay of Naples, and much loved by the Roman emperors.
This marble statue is a copy of the bronze statue of Aphrodite Sosandra created in 460 BC in the severe style characteristic of its creator, the Greek sculptor Calamis.
The word sosandra meant:
“she who saves men”.

Aphrodite Sosandra Lucian of Samosata was able to admire her on the Acropolis of Athens.
Samosata praised the serene smile and the elegance of this Aphrodite, modelled on a young aristocrat.
She is said to be the sister of Cimon, the famous Athenian strategist who defeated the Persians and was a contemporary of Pericles.
If this Aphrodite (Venus) who saves men does not display the same smile as the original Greek version, it is because the polishing of the marble remained unfinished.
But this in no way detracts from the finesse of the folds in the dress beneath the elegant Y-shaped drape of the cloak, created by the position of the leg suggesting a slight contrapposto.
