Goddess Ceres
Fresco - Water-based pigments on coating (75 x 48 cm) 62-79 AD

Ceres is assimilated to Demeter, the Greek goddess of vegetation who made wheat grow and ripen.

This fresco depicts her surrounded by a halo of light and dressed in an elegant drape with vertical folds that emphasises her status as the goddess of good harvests.

She offers wheat in a basket and holds the golden torch of the great mistress of the Eleusinian Mysteries celebrated in her honour.

Ceres was worshipped for having taught agriculture to mankind:

“First, Ceres opened the soil with the curved ploughshare (the plough).

She was the first to give the inhabitants of the earth wheat and food softened by cultivation.

First, she gave them laws; we owe everything to Ceres; it is she whom I must sing of.”
Ovid, Metamorphoses, V, 344
