Saturn
Saturn is depicted here dressed in Roman style, indicating that he is the god of agriculture and vine-pruning, always shown with the reaper’s sickle or the vine-pruner’s pruning knife.

As the god who taught agriculture and civilisation to the Italic peoples, Saturn was regarded as the ancestor of the kings of Latium.

This ancient Latin god was identified with the Greek god Cronus, son of Uranus (the sky) and Gaia (the earth), who had separated his parents by cutting off Uranus’s genitals with a blow from a sickle to put an end to chaotic procreation.

Cronus was the first king to rule over heaven and earth; the ancients identified the time of his reign with the famous “Golden Age”.

The Romans had placed Saturn’s throne on the Capitoline Hill, and the days dedicated to him marked the end of the year with the Saturnalia: these more or less licentious festivals where social classes were turned upside down.
