Flora, “la Primavera”, was the goddess of flowers and spring worshipped by the Sabines.

Flora
The fresco depicts her as a young girl seen from behind, dressed in white and golden yellow like the flowers she is picking as she walks with a light step.

Her right hand delicately grasps the stem of a flower before placing it in the basket shaped like a cornucopia resting in the crook of her left arm.

The elegance of the gesture and the pleats of Flora's clothing create a beautiful image of happiness and lightness; a “Primavera” painted by a Botticelli of the 1st century AD.

According to Ovid, Flora the Sabine was identical to the Greek nymph Chloris married by Zephyr, who gave her the power of flowering; Chloris had offered Giunone a flower that had made her fertile by touching her, thus enabling her to give birth to the god Mars.

The first month of spring was called March in memory of this legend.
