Fresco depicting Hephaestus in his forge at the Archaeological Museum of Naples in Italy

The Forge of Hephaestus, Pompeii, Casa delle Quadrighe

Fresco - Water-based pigments on Coating (77 x 78 cm) 68-79 AD

The Latin god of volcanic fire, Vulcan, was assimilated to Hephaestus, the Greek god of earthly fire, as opposed to the heavenly fire of Zeus.

Fresco of Hephaestus' Forge, Pompeii, Casa delle Quadrighe, Archaeological Museum of Naples
The Forge of Hephaestus
The fresco depicts Hephaestus' forge, where he is hammering a piece of metal that he is holding firmly in his tongs.

Hephaestus is seated, dressed in a loincloth as red as the burning embers of the forge, while the two Cyclopes assisting him are naked and standing opposite him.

This fresco offers a realistic image of the hard work of three blacksmiths who take turns hammering the burning metal: the one in the middle stands up after striking, followed by his neighbour seen from behind, followed by Hephaestus.

The Cyclops seen from behind perfectly captures the dynamism of his movement as he swings his hammer before bringing it down with all his might on the anvil; the tension of his powerful musculature, glistening with sweat, is similar to that of Hephaestus, who will strike after him.

Hephaestus was the genius of metallurgy in the service of gods and heroes, the creator of Poseidon's trident, Zeus's sceptre, Hercules's armour, and Achilles's weapons.
