Paris and Helen, Pompeii, Casa di Giasone

Fresco of Paris and Helen, Pompeii, House of Jason, Archaeological Museum of Naples
Paris and Helen
Fresco - Water-based pigments on plaster (130 × 101 cm) 20–25 AD

This fresco depicts the meeting between Helen and Paris, who had come to visit Sparta.

Paris and Helen are seated on either side of a large door opened by the appearance of Cupid, who looks at Helen and points to Paris sitting opposite her.

Helen responds to Cupid's invitation by gently tilting her head towards Paris and making a graceful feminine sway of her hips, emphasised by the pleats of her golden yellow cloak edged with turquoise green that covers her long purple dress.

Paris and Helen
Paris, son of King Priam, is seated and presents himself as an Eastern prince, crowned with jewels, wearing earrings, and whose body is entirely covered, unlike the Greeks.

The purple and green of his ample clothing are similar to those of Helen's dress and the edges of her cloak.

He shows his emotion by raising one arm and his right foot, ready to rise from his chair to approach the beautiful Helen.

Paris on Mount Ida, Area Pompeiana

Fresco - Water-based pigments on Coating (73 × 58 cm) 1–37 AD

This fresco offers an idyllic image of Paris' youth, which he spent at the foot of Mount Ida in Asia Minor. Paris was the youngest son of Hecuba and Priam, King of Troy.

Paris Mount Ida
Before his birth, Hecuba dreamt that she gave birth to a burning ember that set the whole city on fire.

This premonitory dream prompted his parents to abandon their son on Mount Ida, where he was found and raised by a shepherd.

Paris, wearing a Phrygian cap, is seated next to an altar apparently dedicated to the goddess Artemis, with the rocky massif of Mount Ida symbolised by the reclining figure in the background.

It is a peaceful image of a shepherd surrounded by cows and sheep, with his dog running around them.

In accordance with his mother's dream, Paris will be the cause of the war that will end with the destruction of Troy.

When Zeus calls on his judgement to choose the most beautiful between Athena, Hera and Aphrodite, he chooses Aphrodite because she promises him that he will seduce and abduct Helen, the most beautiful woman in Greece.

Helen being the wife of Menelaus, King of Sparta, he called upon the solidarity of the other Greek rulers to attack Troy.

During this war, which lasted ten years, Paris killed Achilles, the most famous of the Greek heroes, by wounding him with an arrow in the heel, his only weak spot.
