Fresco from Pompeii depicting the departure of Chryseis at the Archaeological Museum of Naples in Italy
The Departure of Chryseis or The Abduction of Helen, Pompeii, Casa del Poeta Tragico
Fresco - Water-based pigments on Coating (116 x 58 cm) 45-79 AD
Departure of Chryseis A young woman is about to board a boat, guided by a man who helps her cross the very narrow gangway, under the worried gaze of the little servant girl accompanying her.
Men wearing warrior helmets watch the woman submissive to male power.
Several interpretations are possible for this fresco.
It could be the beautiful Helen, Queen of Sparta, abducted by Paris, who takes her to Troy, triggering the famous Trojan War.
Given that she is not wearing the veil that covers the hair of married women, some believe that she is actually Chryseis, a princess held captive by Agamemnon during the Trojan War.
Agamemnon was then forced to return the girl to put an end to the plague inflicted on the Greek army by Apollo.
Chryseis, freed by Agamemnon, sets sail to find her family.
