The Torment of Dirce
Fresco - Water-based pigments on coating (140 x 110 cm) 40 AD

Amphion and Zethos punish Dirce by tying her to a wild bull that will drag her to her death.

Antiope was separated from her sons, Amphion and Zethos, for a long time because her uncle Lycos had killed her husband, the king of Sicyon, and brought her back to Thebes.

In Thebes, Dirce, Lycos' wife, abused her power to mistreat her.

Dirce is lying on the ground with a rope around her chest.

The Torment of Dirce
Zethos securely ties the rope to the horns of a wild bull, under the anxious gaze of Antiope, who tries to calm her son's anger by placing a hand on his arm.

The elegance and beautiful colours of Antiope's outfit are those of a queen who has regained her dignity thanks to the strength of her sons.

Meanwhile, Dirce finds herself half-naked, with her garment now covering only her lower body.

Behind the bull, seen from behind, Amphion stands opposite Lycos, who looks on with contrition at the torment of his wife, whom he had allowed to act wrongly, before being killed in turn.
