Fresco depicting Phrixus and Helle in the Archaeological Museum of Naples, Italy
Phrixus and Helle, Pompeii, Casa di Diana I
Fresco - Water-based pigments on Coating (37 × 45 cm) 10-1 BCPhrixus flies away, sitting on the back of the Aries with the Golden Fleece which carries him away from his native country where he was to be sacrificed with his sister Helle who watches him go, stretching out her arms towards him.
Phrixus and Helle were the children of Nephele and Athamas, the Greek king of the land of Coronea.

Phrixus and Helle Athamas had repudiated Nephele to marry Ino, with whom he had two other children.
Ino wanted to get rid of Phrixus and Héllè by bribing the messengers who had gone to consult the oracle at Delphi, announcing that the god demanded that they be sacrificed to put an end to the famine afflicting the country.
Nephele sent the winged ram with the golden fleece offered by Hermes so that it would save them from death by carrying them eastwards.
During the journey, Helle fell and drowned in the sea, in the strait that now bears her name: the Hellespont.
Phrixus arrived safely in Colchis, where he was welcomed by the king Aeetes, who gave him his daughter in marriage.
Phrixus sacrificed the winged ram to Zeus and offered his golden fleece to the king, who kept it preciously in a sacred Venue.
This marvellous fleece of gold later became the prize of the famous expedition of the Argonauts.
